Old Wymering: A Historic Gem in Portsmouth

Old Wymering is part of a series conservation areas in Portsmouth, known for its special architectural and historical significance. Guided by the principles outlined in conservation area no.1 by John Slater in 1994, the primary objective is to preserve and enhance Old Wymering (Slater, 1994).
Mapping Wymering Manor: Connecting Community Spaces for Peaceful Living

The diagram here illustrates how the local communities in Old Wymering are positioned around Wymering Manor. Having visited the site, I experienced tranquility and serenity, especially in this particular zone. The blue lines on the diagram show residential buildings, the red lines represent Wymering Manor, and access points to the site are shown by triangles. Three key landmarks—the church, school, and nursing home—are marked with stars.
This site include educational, residential, and ecclesiastical spaces. Wymering Manor has the potential to fill gaps and offer opportunities for socializing and leisure, acting as a central hub for communication in the area.
As per the Wymering Manor Trust’s guidelines, the approach to restore the house involves:
- Establishing a sustainable future for the manor through conversion and build.
- Redesigning the space to be enjoyed by the local community.
- letting rooms for a variety of purposes, including events, meetings, education, training, ghost hunting, plays, social gatherings, and other innovative activities.
Also to offer help in well being, tackling loneliness and isolation, developing personal skills and bringing the community together.
Wymering Manor’s Potential as a Community Hub

In the outer zone, you can see residential buildings, creating a lively environment around the house. The mid-zone is filled with more spiritual spaces, like the Church of St. Peters and St. Paul.

The local registry office is located near Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, and 5.6 miles away from Wymering Manor.
Queen Alexandra Hospital is near by the building, which can be beneficial for Wymering Manor to serve personal retreat and development opportunities.
Sun light Analysis
Summer Sun Diagram

As shown , sun rise is happening in the west side of Wymering Manor during summer, creating a shadow length up to 2.51m and a daylight duration of 16h13m4s.

Given the chance to maximize natural light exposure, we aim to minimize our reliance on artificial lighting, promoting a more sustainable environment.
After sunset, we’ll use colorful indoor lights to create different moods in each room.
To keep the house cool, we’ll add shading on the west side and plant greenery around the building for a peaceful, Eco-friendly atmosphere.
Winter Sun Diagram

In winter, the house experiences sunrise from the east and sunset from the west, resulting in shorter daylight hours decreases to 8 hours, 20 minutes, and 37 seconds. This emphasizes the need for increased reliance on artificial lighting to ensure optimal visibility and maintain an appealing aesthetic for the house, considering that winter dominates most of the year.

Efficient and Sustainable Lighting for Wymering Manor
I’m planning to use a wireless lighting system in Wymering Manor for my design. It’ll save on construction time and costs, while also being more sustainable for the building.
Based on Portsmouth Guildhall’s Lighting Refurbishment, ICE Facilities Management used a wireless control system for proper lighting in the Guildhall. This approach reduced installation time and maintained the historical appearance.
Adding a wireless lighting system in Wymering Manor will keep its historic vibe while ensuring proper lighting.
Potential Uses and Users

According to the diagram, three hotels surround Wymering Manor. Red Lion Hotel stands a 15-minute walk away, indicating that most visitors to the house would likely come from the local Wymering Manor community as well as people from Portsmouth,Portchester and the surrounding areas, with minimal headcount coming from outside long distant area.
