Task 1: What do you think they mean?

My Thoughts (In Studio)

Task 2: What do they mean?  How can we differentiate them?

Understanding the differences between these terms is essential for effective building development. Preservation involves protecting a building’s existing state and historical significance(nps.gov,2019). Conservation focuses on protecting natural resources and reusing materials(nps.gov,2019).

Restoration is the act of renovating a historic structure to match its historical appearance and functionality(Designingbuildings.co.uk,2022). Re-use Changing an old building for a new use(GHP Architects,2023). Alteration involves changes within a building to enhance or restore its function(Vrunda,2021).

Re-modeling pertains to modifying specific elements within a space or building, often for improved functionality(Mulvey, 2022). Also adapting the building for a new use.(Brooker & Stone, 2010). Re-working deals with construction mistakes and addressing errors made during the building process(Andony, 2022).

Finally, intervention Includes various activities like renovation, extension, or changes of use aimed at upgrading a building(Construction Dictionary,2023).

Spatial Awareness and Movement

Created on Canva.com

In our studio, we watched videos about movement in spaces. One video showed a dancer in a bathroom, expressing how our bodies connect with the space, feeling textures while dancing, and moving around artistically.

This video shows how movement is a key part of how we use space, like walking around or getting from place to place. Victoria Hunter, in her book, talks about how we can understand spaces not just by what we see but also by how we feel and experience them with our bodies and other senses(Hunter, 2021, p. 49).
