  • Designing Through The Sense Of Space

We go for a second visit to Wymering Manor house, this time with a different approach, understanding space through sound and movement. Below are the tasks we undertake in approaching the building.

Task 1: Symphony of Senses

Our first task is to draw our heartbeats as letters with our left hand while blindfolded. We gather and observe each other’s drawings, and then we swap our drawings. To say it out loud as an orchestral performance, the space is full of “bom bom.” It gives a vibe that the house is alive and breathing with a heartbeat..

Task 2: Exploring Space through Sound

In the second task, each of us is given an object to hold while knocking different materials within the space. Holding a ping pong ball and hitting walls to understand its materials feels like having a conversation with the interior of a space. They tell me something, whether the wall is heavy, light, old, or broken.

We are meant to move around, knocking each wall at the same time, creating sounds while communicating spiritually with the space. We gather around and perform a musical scene, starting to make sounds on surfaces by the maestro’s call. The final rhythm makes us experience the space spiritually.

Task 3: Exploring Emotions at Wymering Manor

In the third task, we’re asked to describe our feelings in Wymering Manor in one sentence. I feel my presence in the past and the absence of the present, as if I’ve traveled back in time, with no trace of modern life within the space.

The next step involves transforming our sentences into key words and expressing our feelings once more. At this point, we are asked to develop a written photo collage of our task.

Key Words

  • Union- Uniting with history
  • Spiritual- Full of unseen stories

What did I Feel?

  • Mystery
  • Unity
  • Suspense

Task 4: Analyzing the Space in a Sentence

For the fourth task, we observe any part of any room in the building and begin to analyze it in one sentence. I choose an old, brown, wooden table with four scratched legs in the music room.

The second step is to narrate a story and include our chosen piece of furniture in it.

Here’s The Story

In the music room during winter, people gathered for dinner, listening to the violin and piano in celebration of their union with family and friends. The old, brown, wooden table with its four scratched legs stands as a silent witness to this cherished moment.

Designing Through The Sense Of Space

In the end, we gather and share our thoughts. Listening to other colleagues, I think it’s better to express myself in a deeper and more poetic way. I am really enjoying it and learning a new skill, which is becoming deeply inspired by a place to understand what it needs and what it can become in the future. It’s like designing through the sense of space.
